The Eşme kilim is a traditional handwoven rug from Eşme, a district in Uşak province, Turkey. These kilims are an essential part of Yörük (nomadic Turkic) culture, known for their vivid colors, intricate motifs, and fine weaving technique.
Eşme kilims are handwoven using the flatweave technique, resulting in a thin yet durable structure. The weaving is so precise that the kilims can be used on both sides, making them highly functional. They are typically made from high-quality wool and dyed with natural plant-based colors, ensuring longevity and vibrant hues. The most common colors include red, blue, yellow, green, and orange.
These kilims incorporate traditional Anatolian symbols, each carrying deep cultural meanings.”Elibelinde” (hands-on-hips) represents fertility and femininity, “Koçboynuzu” (ram’s horn) symbolizes strength and bravery, while the eye motif is believed to offer protection against negative energy. Some patterns also depict themes of love and unity, making them meaningful gifts.

Eşme kilims are versatile and used as floor rugs, wall hangings, table covers, or decorative pieces. They have historically been a significant part of dowries, passed down through generations as heirlooms.With their rich history and exceptional craftsmanship, Eşme kilims remain one of the most cherished examples of Anatolian textile art, preserving a centuries-old weaving tradition.
